Culture Days

An EPIC day for SCCS students!

The grades 1, 1-2 and 2 classes had an amazing experience on Friday celebrating Culture Days.

We began our morning at The Forks where we had a chance to listen to some local artists perform. The students were very excited to see the St. Charles Violin Ambassadors preform on the stage. They were so proud to support and cheer on our school. The students decided that listening to the violins was their favourite part! Some of the grade two’s are so excited that they cannot wait to try out for the Violin Ambassadors when they are old enough.

In the afternoon the students learned a little about the heritage of The Forks and the Metis people. The students then had the opportunity to make their very own bannock! The reactions were great; everything from “I don’t like it!” to “This isn’t just good, it is EPIC!!”

All in all the day was an overwhelming success and we have many parent volunteers to thank for that! Thank you very much to all those who volunteered to make this an enriching experience for our students.

Violin Camp

Just Fiddling Around!

ViolinCampOn August 25th and 26th, the Violin Ambassadors attended Violin Camp. During the camp, they learned new music, played community building games, and prepared for their first performance, which was on August 28th. Thank you to the instructors: Mrs. Lalonde, Ms. Sham and Dr. Penny.

It’s Recess Time!

RecessThis year, due to the construction on the south building, the school playground was off limits for recess. Students in K-5 have been walking to a neighborhood park. One with swings, a sandbox and a really big play structure! We met Mr. Boyd on today’s walk, and he was smiling broadly when he shared that it was fun to see so much activity in the neighborhood these days.

Welcome to 2015-2016!

School Starts Up for Another Year.

Wednesday began with the sun shining, children sporting new, shiny uniforms, and scores of families streaming into the school. SCCS is off to a terrific start!

1stDayWe started the morning with settling into our classrooms, then all met in the gym for the Opening Day Assembly. Thank you to the Grade 7 class for running it, Msgr. Comeault for speaking and giving us a blessing, Brennan and Matteo for reminding us about Uniform Pride, and Mrs. Narynski for reviewing TRACK with us. Music was provided by the teachers: Ms. Sham on violin, Ms. Lalonde on clarinet, Ms. Langlois on keyboard, and Ms. Sherlock with vocals.

The day ended with our first Fire Drill.

It was an awesome day!

Staff Begin the School Year

Reconnecting and Moving Forward!

The staff began the school year with  a Prayer Service. It was the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lady, so the service included the Magnificat and the Litany of Our Lady of Loretto. We also prayed for the gifts of the Holy Spirit as we begin to implement the school goals with the children bestowed to us for this academic year.

Staff4We felt the presence of the Oblate Sisters when we watched the video created by their order to introduce lay people to their unique charism. Being that they were our founders, it was nice to re-connect with their spirit of service and witness.

Staff3

Dr. Penny shared a presentation about the values of Catholic Education which included several video clips, among which was Pope Francis speaking to the children of Italian Catholic Schools.

Together with Fr. Peter Nemcek, we visited every room in the building, and asked for (and received) a special blessing for the occupants of the rooms.

The day ended with a visit by the Board of Director’s Chair, Robyn.
