Welcome Lauren Reynolds!
We are pleased to welcome Mrs. Lauren Reynolds to our teaching staff for the 2014-2015 academic year. Mrs. Reynolds may be new to SCCS and to classroom teaching but she has been making an impression in St. James musical circles. As a Registered Music Teacher, Mrs. Reynolds has been operating a private music studio (piano, theory and composition) in the St. James area since 1993. She has also been serving as an accompanist to groups in St. James School Division, accompanying choirs, ensembles and individuals in performances and festivals.
Mrs. Reynolds comes from a family of musicians and is excited about continuing the legacy, having two young children of her own. A certified Orff educator and Kindermusik instructor, Mrs. Reynolds will be working with our K-5 students this upcoming year. She “looks forward to meeting all the St. Charles families and working with everyone”.
Folklarama is an annual local event which relies heavily on volunteer efforts. Volunteers are needed as organizers, cooks, hosts, performers, cleaners, etc.
SCCS is proud of our students (and alumni) who performed at the various pavilions during Folklarama this year. At both the Irish Celtic Pavilion and the Greek Pavilion several SCCS students participated in ethnic dance ensembles and contributed to the cultural displays. Our alumni continued to perform and now have taken on leadership roles such as youth ambassador.
“Congratulations” and “Thanks” are extended to our SCCS Finance Officer, Athena Dinos, who co-coordinated the Greek pavilion and to the many SCCS families and staff who volunteered at various venues throughout the two-week event.
BASC Programming offered through the summer months
Under the direction of Kim Furutani and with the support of the SCCS BASC staff, a summer camp program was offered for our students.
The 6 week program which ran five days per week through July and August set St. Charles Catholic Church as its “home base”. The participants were very appreciative of the air conditioned church basement!
Each morning the students and staff met at the Church before heading off into the community. Activities included days spent at various spray pads complete with water fights, lots of sun and picnic lunches; trips to the Fringe Festival children’s events; visits to the Forks and the Assiniboine Park where feeding the ducks and birds become a favorite pastime. Although for the most part the weather cooperated, some days were spent inside baking, attending museums, playing miniature golf, and creating arts and crafts.
The students loved being at camp with their best friends from school; the staff enjoyed planning back-to-back fun days with the students; the parishioners were pleased to experience our school community first-hand on a daily basis; and parents cannot say enough about how smoothly, efficiently and professionally it operated. No doubt about it, this first summer camp experience was a huge success for our SCCS community!

SCCS welcomes a returning staff member
Welcome Back, Jennifer (Brunel) Baker
St. Charles Catholic School is pleased to welcome Mrs. Jennifer (Brunel) Baker to our teaching staff for the 2014-2015 academic year. Mrs. Baker returns to SCCS after several years teaching for the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board. Mrs. Baker is an Early Years Specialist and is certified in Special Education.
“I am so thrilled to be rejoining the SCCS community this school year as a Grade 2 teacher! Since sadly leaving SCCS in 2009, I have been living near Barrie, ON and teaching with the local Catholic school board. We are a proud military family and jumped on the opportunity presented to us this past summer to return “home” to Winnipeg. It will be wonderful to be near my extended family that lives near by and connect with students and the larger SCCS community. I enjoy spending time with my family and our 3 1/2 yr old son, Joshua, brings us so much joy!” Mrs. Baker
“Now may the God of hope make you full of joy and peace through faith, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans (15:13)
This year, the school goals for St. Charles Catholic School revolve around the theme of “power”. They are:
Goal 1 – “Power of Prayer” – The goal this year is for every person in our school to experience first-hand the power of prayer. We will learn to pray together and for one another as a caring community. We will know we are successful in this objective if all members of our community experience a higher than usual level of joy-full-ness. To this end all members of SCCS are invited to join in the following prayer:
Let us pray:
Jesus, grant that all of the families at SCCS be joy-filled this year.
Give us the grace to share your joy with one another, to be supportive, standing by people at every step of the way, no matter how difficult or lengthy this may prove to be.
May each one of us experience the power of prayer in our lives. Amen
Goal 2 – “Power of 10” – We believe that the ability to demonstrate automaticity in math is fundamental. Our goal this year is that every student increase his/her automaticity skills in math by 10% and that every student demonstrates automaticity at or above grade level. To this end, the math teachers will be using a supplementary math program titled “the Power of 10”.
Goal 3 – “Power of Excellence in Writing” – For almost two decades the students at SCCS have been using a writing program called Excellence in Writing. Our goal this year is that through efficient implementation of the program every student increase his/her abilities in writing by 10% or more.
